Safe Sleeping for baby...
- In warm weather, all baby needs to wear beneath a wrap is a singlet and nappy. Overheating has been linked with SIDS so try
to keep her sleep environment at a cool, comfortable temperature.
- In cool weather, dress your baby in a lightweight jumpsuit beneath a wrap. Don't use a bunny rug or blanket - they can cause baby to overheat. Also be careful not to overheat the house, especially if baby is battling an infection.
- A natural instinct for parents is to wrap up baby warm during the
cold winter months, but it's important not to overdo it.
- A baby will sleep comfortably in a room heated to a temperature between 16c (61f) and 20c (68f).
- Wrapping is not only soothing for babies but it can help reduce the risk of SIDS by keeping baby on their back during sleep. Not all babies like to be wrapped so follow their cues and respect their wishes if there is resistance.
- From the age when baby naturally resists wrapping or becomes too old for
it (usually around 4 months or as soon as she can roll onto her tummy) a
Sleeping Bag / Sleep Sack
should be used. (Alternatively, the Snuggle Pod can be used beyond 4
months by fastening under the arms rather than around the shoulders,
keeping arms free.)
- A sleep sack is a good alternative to wrapping because, like wrapping, it keeps baby covered and helps keep her on her back.
- It's not recommended to wrap babies who bed-share with their parents as this can cause overheating. Dress baby as you would dress yourself in this situation.
